Soybean Meal

Description

Soybean meal is widely used in food and animal feeds, principally as a protein supplement, but also as a source of metabolizable energy. Typically, 1 bushel (i.e., 60 lbs. or 27.2 kg) of soybeans yields 48 lbs. (21.8 kg) of soybean meal. This product is produced from the residue left after oil extraction. The removal of the oil, which is used mostly in food products, but also for industrial oils, soaps, and biodiesel, involves crushing and either pressing or solvent extraction. As a result, The product is a valuable byproduct of the oil extraction process.

Some, but not all, soybean meal contains ground soybean hulls, which are an additional source of fiber. These hulls contribute to the nutritional profile of soybean meal, making it suitable for use in various animal feeds. In addition to its protein content, soybean meal provides other essential nutrients, making it an important ingredient in livestock diets, including those of cattle, poultry, and pigs. The high protein content of soybean meal supports growth, maintenance, and reproduction in animals.

During production, it is heat-treated to denature the trypsin inhibitors found in soybeans. Trypsin inhibitors are naturally occurring compounds that can interfere with protein digestion. By heating the product, these inhibitors are neutralized, ensuring that the proteins in the meal are more easily digested by animals. This makes this product  a highly digestible and efficient source of protein for animal nutrition.
